Coal is an excellent resource in terms of its stability of supply and its economic competitiveness. It is used as an extremely important energy resource as one of the constituents of China and many others' energy mix. Coal use, however, represent a challenge of reducing emissions of air pollutants and CO2. In response to this challenge, number of technologies capable of significantly reducing emissions of criteria pollutants.
The 1st Commitment Period of the Kyoto Protocol has already started and countries involved are urged to take urgent countermeasures mitigating global warming, and environmental consciousness of companies and general public has been increasingly heightened for coal use.
Higher efficiency power generation and lower pollutant and CO2 emission are said to be two critical aspects of clean coal industry. While, more detailed countermeasures are required to ensure the reliability and economy of commercial-scale utilization of clean coal technologies.
