Due to demographic development of 1.6 billion by 2030 and industrialization and urbanization drive which will last at least for three decades, China encounters overwhelming unbalance between demand and supply in water resources. To resolve this shortage, total investment needs for water sector in China during 2006-2010 are estimated to reach RMB 1000 billion, within which the number for sewage disposal & recycling and water quality improvement, supply security & desalination will respectively be over RMB 330 billion and 300 billion. According to the 11th five-year plan, sewage disposal ratio for Chinese cities by 2010 is set to reach 60%, with the number for major cities up to 80%.
