Pre-conference Workshop:
Eco-industrial Parks (EIP): much more than an ecology concept
Led by: Earnest Lowe, Director, Indigo Development
Supported by: Chinese Ecological Economics Society
While industrialization brought wealth and development to
the economies, it has also carried along many externalities,
and one of these is industrial pollution. Applying ecology
to industrial parks seems to be a win-win solution.
An unofficial count revealed that there are about 4,000 industrial
estates in Asia nowadays. This volume of clustered industrial
activities can create significant impact, depending on the
choice of management. In a short period the eco-industrial
park has evolved from a visionary concept to hundreds of projects
seeking to implement the concept around the world. This rapid
dissemination has naturally led to differing understandings
of what the term means. The broader definition of eco-industrial
park yields many more strategies to further the important
transition to the Circular Economy by identifying the EIP
as a hub to regional economic development. In this way, the
EIP has a very active economic role in creating or expanding
enterprises and opening employment opportunities while increasing
productivity of resource use and lowering pollution. The ¡°eco¡±
in the name stands for economic as well as ecological benefits.
In China the State EPA has identified the EIP as one of the
important tools for realizing the Circular Economy. However,
many specific pilot project plans have focused on company
exchanges or ¡°eco-chains¡± rather than using the full systems
definition.
This workshop aims at unfolding an EIP landscape right in
front of you, helping you with understanding the deeper concept
of EIP and sharing the experience with you.
